West Karadzhilgin Fm

Period:
Carboniferous

Age Interval:
Visean – Moscovian (C1-2? zk), Ka1

Province:
NE corner Tajik

Type Locality and Naming

It was delineated in 1965 by Ye.F. Roman'ko, E.S. Chern'er, and I.V. Pyzyanov.

Lithology Pattern:
Clayey limestone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The underlying deposits are unknown.

Upper contact

The suite is overlain with a concealed unconformity (R) by the rocks of the Lower Permian.

Regional extent

It is widespread in the Karakul district.

Fossils

In the limestones of the West Karadzhilgin Fm (западнокараджилгинской свиты), a Visean foraminiferal and rugose complex was found: Archaediscus krestovnikovi Raus., Mediocris mediocris (Viss.), Eostafiella ikensis Viss., Caninia cf. subibicina McCoy, Lithostrotion ex gr. volkovae Dobrol., as well as Viséan Namurian rugose corals: Clisiophyllum sp., Caninophyllum sp., Dibunophyllum ex gr. turbinatum MсСоу. (Ta'irov, Chern'er, 1970). E.Ya. Leven and A.Kh. Kafarskii (1965) point to the finds in this layer of fusulinids from the Middle Carboniferous.

Age

Due to the small amount of paleontological data, the age of the West Karadzhilgin Fm can be determined only as early-middle Carboniferous, and it is not excluded that there may be Upper Carboniferous deposits in it due to the overlying of the suite without an apparent unconformity by the rocks of the Lower Permian.
